Columbus' Vacant and Abandoned Housing Issue
We applaud Mayor Coleman for taking action with plans to demolish the worst case properties that pose such a risk for neighbors health and safety (read 2.23.12 Columbus Dispatch story). Rather than focus on the 900 targeted for demolition, which city inspectors have already deemed dangerous and uninhabitable, we are turning our attention to the 5,100+ other houses also at risk due to vacancy or abandonment. We are having discussions with city and neighborhood leaders to better understand the issue and the roadblocks. We are contacting other preservation organizations about what creative solutions, if any, are being considered or implemented in other cities. We believe the problem in Columbus, although severe, is not comparable to other cities where wholesale demoliton is the proposed solution.
The loss of a house in a neighborhood is about so much more than the house itself. It is about the broader and more abstract issues of dismantling neighborhood solidarity, threatening a community's heritage and losing a sense of hope. We are looking for partners interested in exploring creative solutions to tackling this monumental challenge, even if only one building at a time. We ask you to take action today for the future - make it a priority to support us as we seek viable solutions for those buildings within our downtown and in our neighborhoods that merit preservation, whether they are a most notable early 19th c. landmark or a modest and vulnerable single family house.

Be an Architectural Detective: Help Identify Our City's Oldest Buildings
We are looking for help in identifying existing buildings (or parts of buildings) from the early settlement period of the city, 1812-1862, to create an oldest buildings archive. Though officially the first 50 years of the city, structures dating before 1812 or just after the Civil War (1870s) are also important and can be included. Buildings should be within the city limits and may be houses, commercial structures, religious institutions, stables, spring houses, carriage houses, schools, or parts of buildings that exist behind or even within other structures.
What and where are these early structures?
How old is the building you are nominating and how do you know the age?
Any additional information relating to its use or to families or personal stories is also encouraged. Contemporary or historic images are also welcome. Information can be sent to kmastkane@columbuslandmarks.org through March 16, 2012. All information collected will be shared with The Columbus Dispatch.
